Magna Carta 2

Lesson of the day

Magna Carta 2

Listen: You can hear the episode here (Apple podcasts) on YouTube, or on our website. Feel free to take notes on our graphic organizer while you do.

Do: Ok Bayeaux? (Grade 6-12)

Sure, we know that the 63 clauses comprising the OG 1215 Magna Carta may seem utterly irrelevant to your daily life. Lots about scutage, bailiffs, burgage in the fee-farm. BUT! When we look back at it with our hindsight bifocals, it contained ideals that were cornerstones of our democracy. So why not make a new one for citizens 800 years hence?

That little illustration of clause 30 from Magna Carta was made with one of our favorite gems from ye olden internette days of 2004, The Bayeaux Tapestry Generator. And yes, the Bayeaux Tapestry is from 1070 and Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, but it’s close enough. Onto the activity!

FIRST! Pick one rule from one of these original 63 clauses and design a tapestry using this generator.

SECOND! Write one rule you wish was sealed into a big official charter right now, and design a tapestry for it. Is it about voting laws? Term limits? Presidential powers? Email it to me, nick@civics101podcast.org if you’d like us to share it with the world and put on this page. Mine is nonpartisan by design, but yours shouldn’t be!
