Census 3: What has changed in a decade?

Lesson of the day

Census - Grades 7-12

Explore: You have to wait 72 years to access individual census information (unless it’s about you or your legal heir!), but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a lot from more recent censuses. Think about a city or town that you know well — it could be where you live, it could be somewhere you just love — and check out its 2010 census data. You can find it by clicking this link. Watch this video for a quick how-to.

The Census Bureau created the Statistics in Schools program to provide free resources and activities designed by teachers to help teach the 2020 census in the year to come. You can check out all of those amazing resources here!

Listen: You can hear the episode here (Apple podcasts) on YouTube, or on our website. Feel free to take notes on our graphic organizer while you do.

When you listen to the episode, keep these questions in your mind:

  • Why is the census so important in the first place?

  • What would be the effect if large groups of people in your town didn’t fill it out?
