U.S. Territories

What is a U.S. territory? What is the status of its citizens with regard to the Constitution and U.S. law? Doug Mack, author of The Not-Quite States of America joins us for a lesson on territories.

There's no shame in coming up with tools to help recall a list of names, it's how we learned the planets, the capitals, the periodic table, and goodness knows what else. So we're asking you to come up with a good mnemonic device, song, or some other way to help remember the 5 permanently inhabited, unincorporated U.S. territories. Then we'll pick one and include it in our weekly newsletter Extra Credit! Send us an email at civics101@nhpr.org

Here's the list:

U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. Virgin Islands

Guam

Guam

American Samoa

American Samoa

The Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

If you want double super extra credit, try to come up with a mnemonic device for all 16 U.S. territories!
